This fall I’ve discussed entertaining alternatives to a dinner party, highlighting the appeal and simplicity of seasonal appetizers and first courses. I’ve touched on ideas for a soup and salad evening and also a fondue spread. Last week I shared a favorite drink and a bite to savor with friends. Today I’m focusing on three simple appetizers, all perfect for a cocktail party.
When throwing a cocktail party you want to offer noshes that people can hold in 1 hand and eat in 1 to 2 bites. You will want enough food to keep your guests from getting [too] drunk but also not spend days preparing. The key is to do as much as possible in advance so you can enjoy your gathering.
Deviled Eggs are a great make ahead option. Boil the eggs and make the filling earlier in the day so you can serve the eggs well chilled. Refrigerator pickles can be made anywhere from 3 days to 2 months in advance and you can bake the crostini for Pear and Swiss Crostini up to 3 days prior.
Keep your bar simple by offering a small but good selection of fall-friendly booze, full bodied red wine, a stellar IPA, Bourbon, spiced rum, apple cider for a mixer and one signature drink, such as Sparkling Pear Cocktails.
For decor, skip the flowers and use winter squashes, pumpkins and gourds to cover any surfaces. Put out a platter of apple cider donuts for dessert and enjoy a night with friends!
